School Bus Replacement Program

The UDAQ partnered with Utah State Office of Education and 14 school districts located in PM2.5 non-attainment areas to replace older buses with new cleaner burning school buses. UDAQ will provide each participating school district with $44,000 to be used to purchase new buses. Any remaining cost will be covered by the school districts. This fund leveraging will allow UDAQ to help purchase 27 new school buses, which reduces the amount of time needed to retire older buses from the fleet. Total federal funding will be $924,000.

With funds from this grant, each participating school district will be able to purchase at least one new school bus. Any remaining funds will be used to purchase additional new school buses. UDAQ and USOE will evaluate potential school buses to be replaced based on the bus age, miles traveled, and ridership.
UDAQ estimates that minimum emissions reductions are 844.86 tons of nitrogen oxide, 33.83 tons of particulate matter, 43.55 tons of Hydrocarbon (or Volatile Organic Compounds), and 285.06 tons of carbon monoxide.
